Curse (呪撃, Jugeki) is a keyword introduced in SD01, exclusive to Purple Spirits. The effect is worded as follows:

  • Curse (When Attacks)
Destroy an opposing Spirit that blocked when the battle resolves at the end of battle.

A keyword which can destroy the blocking Spirit, regardless of the end result from resolving battles, ignoring the major factors of battles such as BP comparison. Even if the Spirit with Curse is destroyed via comparing BP, Curse can still activate at the end of battle, when the Spirit itself is supposedly no longer present. If the Spirit with Curse is removed from the Field before resolving the battle, Curse won't activate.

Being one of the oldest keywords in the game, the way Curse functions clashes with a lot of current rulings. In the past, the keyword uses the trigger timing "when a block has declared", indicating that Curse would begin checking for conditions when the opposing Spirit blocks. However, later on with a rule change which persists till this day, the timing is changed to "when resolving the battle", meaning the trigger timing is pushed back, and hence, as mentioned above, if the Spirit with Curse is removed from the Field before resolving the battle, Curse won't activate. This also means that if the Spirit gains Curse mid-battle, for example, by levelling up, the effect can still activate at the end of battle.

The rulebook also has to specify that Curse can activate even if the Spirit is no longer on the field after resolving the battle, as normally, any effects with the "end of battle" can only activate if the effect holder is still on the field by then.

As Curse is a Spirit-targeting effect, once Ultimates were introduced to the game, the keyword has died down.

There are other keywords derived from Curse, including Spell Blight and True-Curse.
